The Brunate Funicular at Night: A Complete Guide to the Evening Ride Above Lake Como

The Como-Brunate funicular is more than transport — it’s an experience. Built in 1894, this historic railway climbs 500 metres in just 7 minutes, passing through tunnels, over bridges and through forest canopy. But the real magic happens at night, when the city lights of Como sparkle below and the lake becomes a dark mirror reflecting the moon.

A Brief History

The funicolare Como-Brunate has been running since November 11, 1894 — making it one of Italy’s oldest funicular railways still in operation. Originally steam-powered, it was electrified in 1911. Today’s cars carry up to 80 passengers along 1,084 metres of track, climbing at a gradient of up to 55%. The journey passes through the rock of the mountain via a short tunnel and over a dramatic viaduct.

The Evening Ride

Taking the funicular up to Brunate at sunset or after dark is one of Lake Como’s finest free experiences. As you ascend, the panorama unfolds: Como’s cathedral dome, the lakefront promenade, the boats on the water, and eventually the entire basin of the lake stretching north toward Bellagio. At night, the city becomes a constellation below you.
