Como-Brunate Funicular: Complete Guide to Reaching the Balcony of the Alps

Como-Brunate Funicular panoramic view of Lake Como

The Como-Brunate funicular is much more than a means of transport — it’s one of the most iconic experiences on Lake Como. Operating since 1894, this historic rack railway takes you in just 7 minutes from Piazza De Gasperi, in the heart of Como, up to the village of Brunate, at 500 metres above sea level.

How the Como-Brunate Funicular Works

The funicular departs from Como station (Piazza De Gasperi), easily reachable on foot from the Cathedral. The ride takes about 7 minutes and offers increasingly spectacular views as you climb: the lake, the old town of Como, the historic villas, and the Alps in the background.

Timetable & Tickets

The funicular runs all year round, with departures every 15-30 minutes depending on the season. In summer (June-September) the last evening ride is later, perfect for those who want to enjoy the sunset from above. Tickets are sold at the station and the current fares are published on the funicular operator’s website, funicolarecomo.it.

Local tip: Take the funicular about an hour before sunset. You’ll arrive in Brunate in time for an aperitivo on MamaGina’s terrace while the sun dips behind the mountains. It’s the most beautiful moment of the day.

What to Do Once You Arrive in Brunate

Brunate is known as the “Balcony of the Alps” for a reason. From the funicular station, a short walk leads you to breathtaking viewpoints overlooking the entire lake. Here’s what not to miss:

The Volta Lighthouse (Faro Voltiano)

A 1.8 km walk from the funicular’s upper station, with about 200 metres of elevation gain, takes you to this octagonal lighthouse, built in 1927 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Alessandro Volta’s death. From the top, on clear days, you can see from Monte Rosa to the Apennines. It’s one of the most photographed spots on Lake Como.

The Liberty Villas

Brunate is home to some of the finest Art Nouveau architecture in Lombardy. Strolling through the village, you’ll discover colourful facades, ornate balconies, and gardens that seem frozen in time — a legacy of the Belle Époque, when Brunate was the favourite retreat of Milan’s aristocracy.

Dinner with the Best View on Lake Como

After exploring, there’s no better way to end the day than dinner at MamaGina. Our terrace sits at 500 metres above the lake, offering a panorama that stretches from Como to Bellagio. Gina’s kitchen serves authentic Italian cuisine — from our legendary Spaghetti MamaGina to the Mega Tiramisù that everyone talks about.

Practical Tips for Your Visit

The funicular gets busy on summer weekends and holidays — arriving before 11am or after 4pm avoids the crowds. If you’re driving, there’s limited parking near the Como station (Piazza De Gasperi), but the historic centre is just a 10-minute walk away.

For an unforgettable evening: take the funicular up around 6pm, enjoy an aperitivo at MamaGina watching the sunset, stay for dinner, then ride back down with the city lights reflecting on the lake below. It’s pure magic.
